Kaplan SAT vs. ClassVal: Which Format Fits, and What the Guarantee Requires

Kaplan sells On Demand, Live Online and tutoring SAT prep; ClassVal starts free. Compare formats and guarantee conditions as of October 7, 2026.

Kaplan and ClassVal both prepare you for the Digital SAT, but Kaplan sells a ladder of paid formats: a self-paced On Demand course, Live Online classes and private tutoring. ClassVal is a daily practice plan that starts free. This post is about the format question: which rung of Kaplan's ladder matches which kind of student, and what the Higher Score Guarantee asks you to do before it pays out.

Pick the format by the help you need. Live instruction and tutoring give you a person. A daily practice plan gives you volume and mistake review. Do not pay for one when you need the other.

ClassVal publishes this post, so read it with that in mind. Every Kaplan detail below comes from Kaplan's own pages, and we say where we could not find something. Where Kaplan is the better fit, we say so.

How We Compared These

ClassVal is the publisher of this article. We compared the two companies using public information as of October 7, 2026: Kaplan's SAT On Demand, Live Online and tutoring pages, its Higher Score Guarantee page and its free practice test page, and ClassVal's own terms and plan information. Kaplan's site blocked our direct page loads on the day we checked, so we read its pages through search-result excerpts of those same pages. For that reason we left out any figure we could not confirm, including the current Live Online price and tutoring hourly rates.

We did not buy or test any Kaplan product, so this post covers what Kaplan says about itself, not how it feels to use. Prices, promotions and guarantee terms change. Confirm everything on kaptest.com before you pay.

What Kaplan Is Built Around

Kaplan's On Demand page lists more than 30 instructional videos, quizzes with each lesson, four full-length adaptive digital SAT practice tests and a question bank of more than 500 questions, starting at $199. Kaplan's Live Online page lists 18 hours of live instruction, 2+ teachers per class, the same four practice tests and the 500+ question bank, plus on-demand lessons and a digital performance dashboard. Kaplan also sells private SAT tutoring in blocks of 10, 20, 30 or 40 hours that, per its tutoring page, bundle one-to-one sessions with practice tests and a Live Online course (we could not confirm tutoring prices).

That is a full-service lineup. If you want a teacher explaining content on a schedule, or a tutor looking at your work, Kaplan sells that and ClassVal does not.

Kaplan's Free Practice Test

Kaplan also offers a free SAT practice test. Its page describes a full-length, adaptive simulation in an interface that mimics the Bluebook app, with a detailed score report and answers and explanations after you finish. We could not tell from the page whether the score is a prediction or is calibrated to College Board's scale, so treat it as an estimate. For official practice, Bluebook remains the reference point.

ClassVal's free plan is different in kind: it is a standing free tier with 35 adaptive questions a day and one full-length test, with no credit card and no time limit.

How the Higher Score Guarantee Reads

Kaplan's guarantee page offers a refund or a repeat of the program if your score does not rise, subject to conditions such as completing the course and the recommended work. From the terms we could read, the conditions include: for tutoring packages of 10 hours or more you must submit a baseline score by your second session, submit three practice tests for scoring by the end of the program and complete all purchased tutoring sessions; you must choose a guarantee option within 90 days after your program access ends; the refund route requires your official score report and diagnostic results; and the repeat option lets you repeat the program one time. The terms also say subscription-based purchases are not eligible and that purchases through resellers are not covered. Kaplan states the guarantee is not a promise of any particular score.

The practical difference is what you must do. Kaplan's terms center on finishing a program, submitting practice tests for scoring and acting within 90 days of access ending. ClassVal's center on a logged baseline, every scheduled Map session and an official score. Neither guarantee promises your score will rise. Our Princeton Review comparison walks through ClassVal's refund conditions step by step, and the Terms page has the full text. Read the full terms of any guarantee before you rely on it.

Needing a live class with a schedule and a teacherKaplan Live Online
Wanting one-to-one human helpKaplan tutoring; ClassVal has none
Wanting a daily plan that rebuilds when you miss daysClassVal, for the Map
Knowing the content but repeating the same mistakesClassVal, for the Lab
Wanting to spend nothing until you are sureClassVal's free plan, or Kaplan's free practice test
Wanting the lowest list price for practiceClassVal, if practice is what you need

Before paying for any format, take a free Bluebook practice test so you know your baseline.

Your Next Step

  1. Name your gap. Concepts you never learned need lessons or a teacher. Concepts you know but misapply need targeted practice.
  2. Take one free test. Use Bluebook or Kaplan's free test, and sort your misses by skill.
  3. Try a free daily routine for a week. ClassVal's free plan shows whether you keep a daily habit before you pay for anything.
  4. Read the guarantee terms on the company's site before you rely on a refund.
