Most SAT prep tools can show you a question. One thing that separates them is what happens after you get it wrong. Every tool in this comparison explains answers in some form; they differ in where the explanation lives, what it costs, and whether a missed question ever comes back. This post compares five tools on that one job, using each company's own pages.
A wrong answer only helps if you can read why, and see the same skill again soon. Check both before you pick a tool.
ClassVal publishes this post, so read it with that in mind. We describe the other tools only from what their own sites say, we date every claim, and where a free official option is the better fit we say so.
How We Compared These
ClassVal is the publisher of this post. The details for Bluebook and Khan Academy come from College Board pages. The UWorld details come from UWorld's SAT page, and the OnePrep details come from OnePrep's home and pricing pages. We read all of them on October 12, 2026. The ClassVal details come from our own product and Premium page.
We did not buy or test the other tools, so we report what each company says, not how good the explanations are. Where we could not find something, we say so. That is not the same as saying a tool lacks it. Prices and features change, so confirm everything on each company's site.
The Two Jobs a Good Explanation Does
A good explanation has two jobs. The first is to show you why the right answer is right. The second is to show you why your choice was wrong. If you picked a trap answer, you need the second one, because the same trap shows up again.
Then there is the loop. Reading an explanation once is thin practice. A commonly recommended habit is to log the miss, return to it later, and answer a similar question correctly. We look at that loop for each tool below.
What Each Tool Says It Gives You
- Bluebook (College Board). As of October 2026, College Board says you can take the practice tests for free in Bluebook. In My Practice, the Score Details page shows each question, your submitted answer and the correct answer, and a Review link next to each answer opens the question and its explanation.
- Khan Academy. College Board's Khan page says the practice is free and that, after a Bluebook practice test, a walk-through course gives "a detailed explanation of every question on that practice test." It says each explanation ends with a link to a lesson on the related skills, and College Board describes the wider course as thousands of practice questions, videos, lessons and hints.
- UWorld SAT. UWorld's SAT page says each question bank answer includes "visual, step-by-step breakdowns and detailed wrong-answer analysis," and describes a performance dashboard with domain and topic-level accuracy. The question bank is listed from $99.
- OnePrep. OnePrep's home page lists AI explanations and says you can review scores, weak areas and explanations. Its pricing page lists a Preppy AI tutor that uses "orbs," with 10 a week on Free, 50 a week on Plus and unlimited on Pro.
- ClassVal. After you answer, a "Why this works" section shows the written explanation when one exists for that question. If you chose a wrong answer and a choice-specific note exists, a "Why your answer missed" section shows it. If no written explanation exists, the app says so and offers Coach.
| Tool | Where explanations appear | Cost listed |
|---|---|---|
| Bluebook | Score Details > Review next to each answer | Free practice tests |
| Khan Academy | Walk-through course for each Bluebook practice test; lessons, videos and hints | Free |
| UWorld SAT | Step-by-step breakdowns inside the question bank | Question bank listed from $99 |
| OnePrep | AI explanations; Preppy AI tutor uses orbs | Free tier; Plus $115 and Pro $131.66 one-time through Nov 8, 2026 |
| ClassVal | After-answer debrief; Coach for follow-ups | Free tier; Premium $5.99 a month |
Which Tools Bring Missed Questions Back
Here is what we could confirm from each company's pages.
- Bluebook and Khan Academy: College Board says the Score Details page in My Practice shows every submitted and correct answer, so you can build your own list of misses. We did not find a built-in queue that re-serves old misses on those pages.
- UWorld: its page says the dashboard tracks strengths and weaknesses and that explanations help you "turn every mistake into a learning opportunity." We did not find a described feature that re-serves missed questions.
- OnePrep: the pricing page mentions topic-level weak spots and advanced analytics on Pro. We could not find a mistake-review loop described there.
- ClassVal: the Lab keeps every miss on record as a card grouped by domain. A card stays waiting until you answer it correctly later, and a short review mode, Flip 5, replays waiting cards. The Lab is on the free plan.
That is a design difference, not a quality ranking. The official tools are free. A re-serve loop is only useful if you will actually use it.
Where Each Option Is the Better Pick
- Choose Bluebook plus Khan Academy if you want free, official explanations for full-length tests. For a review of the practice test you just took, they are hard to beat.
- Choose UWorld if you want a large paid bank with detailed step-by-step breakdowns and are happy to buy a fixed window of access.
- Choose OnePrep if you want an AI tutor and are comfortable with an orb allowance. Check the pricing page for what the free tier covers.
- Choose ClassVal if your problem is repeating the same mistakes and you want missed questions to return without managing a spreadsheet.
ClassVal's limits matter here. Free students get 35 questions a day and one full-length adaptive test, and Coach chat on the free plan runs on coins. Premium removes the daily cap and makes Coach chat unlimited. We have no video lessons, and we do not promise a score from any tool, including ours.
What We Could Not Verify
- We could not tell how deep OnePrep's explanations go, or what its Free tier includes, beyond the pricing page.
- We did not test the explanations of any tool, including quality or accuracy. We report what companies say they include.
A Four-Step Way to Choose
- Take one Bluebook test and open every explanation. This costs nothing and shows you what official explanations feel like.
- Try one session in a second tool. Take a question you got wrong in your own practice and read what the explanation says about your choice.
- Check the loop. Ask whether that miss will return in a few days without you remembering it.
- Read the terms before paying. Confirm price, access dates and renewal on the company's own page.
FAQ: SAT Prep Answer Explanations
Does Bluebook explain SAT practice test answers?
As of October 2026, College Board says the Score Details page in My Practice shows each question, your answer and the correct answer, and a Review link opens the question and its explanation. Confirm in your own account that a given test shows explanations.
Is Khan Academy a good place to review a practice test?
College Board says Khan Academy offers a free walk-through course with a detailed explanation of every question on a Bluebook practice test. For reviewing a full-length test you just took, it is a strong free option.
Do I need a paid tool for good explanations?
Not necessarily. Free official resources include explanations. A paid or free-to-start tool may be useful for extra volume or for bringing misses back, but that depends on your habits.
How should I review a wrong SAT answer?
Our guide to reviewing Reading and Writing mistakes walks through a full routine. The short version: read the explanation, restate the rule in your own words, and come back to a similar question later.
Will better explanations raise my score?
We cannot promise a score from any tool. Whether your score moves depends on whether your practice and review show the same mistakes shrinking over time.
